Parks

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

Hi Everyone,

We have been looking at parks this week. As part of our topic we have been reading the Percy the Park Keeper books. The children enjoyed the stories – especially the one about Hedgehog’s balloon. We now have a new friend in the class – a puppet hedgehog called Horace. They enjoyed playing with him to retell the story.

The children have done lots of writing about the topic and took photos of their writing so that we could look at it altogether on the smartboard. Some children made Percy the Park Keeper’s shed and a wheelbarrow for him. The children were able to tell Mr. Dow all about the stories when he came into our class for a visit.

In numeracy the children have been learning to add two numbers together to make twenty. We will be continuing with this next week.

We visited the park on Thursday afternoon and looked at the signs and what they meant, and after having a walk around the park we went to the playground. We talked about the play equipment and what it was made of. They then enjoyed some time on the play equipment before returning to class.

I don’t know where the time goes!

Transport – trains

Uncategorized No Comments »

Hi Everyone,

This week we have been looking at the story of The Little Red Train. The children did some fantastic writing. I was really pleased with them. Some of the children made a train outside and we played ‘going on a journey’. We visited Blackpool and other places. We used some musical instruments to make the different sounds a train makes.

The children enjoyed being outside this week as the weather was a bit nicer. Some children enjoyed being the ship’s crew, and even acted out the sinking of the ship using crates as pretend life boats. The children love playing in the tyres that we have put outside.

The children who attend the martial arts classes are coming on really well. They were really concentrating on what they were being taught. We also practised the dance that the children will be doing for Jubilee Week – Shake Rattle and Roll by Bill Hayley.

The children have been learning number bonds to ten. They wrote picture sums themselves – two circles both containing a different number of spots to make ten. They also used cars to make number bonds to ten. The children were also able to write their own sums and some of the children knew number bonds to twenty.

Finally, thank you Hayden and Kai who brought in some buns for the children to eat – what a treat!

Pirates

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

Hi Everyone,

As part of our transport topic we looked at pirates this week. We read about the Little Red Boat who befriended some pirates after they had tried to shoot cannon balls at it. The children wrote some wonderful stories about the boat.
Numeracy this week was on coin recognition. The children enjoyed completing the money men using the appropriate coins.

We had a lovely surprise on Monday when Mrs. Lang came in with baby Baxter. The children enjoyed stroking his hair and touching his fingers. He was very good and slept most of the time. He must have got used to the noise when he was in Mrs. Lang’s tummy!

The children helped to make a wonderful car wash and enjoyed going in and out of it to get their vehicles washed. Lots of them made pirate hats and some children made a treasure box. We used the treasure box to put all the coins in. They also made some wonderful traffic lights to go with the traffic light poem that we talked about.

On Friday Miss Murch and myself took the children to the pond to see the ducklings but unfortunately only the mother duck was there. It resulted in a lot of discussion about where the ducklings could be. The children were disappointed but enjoyed their walk to the pond.

Hi Everyone,

First of all a big welcome to Katie who has come to join Yellow class. She has settled in really well and all of the children have been keen to help her during the week. I hope she will enjoy the rest of her time with us all in Yellow class.

We started a new topic this week on Transport. On the carpet session I asked the children what they already knew about the different forms of transport and I was very surprised at the amount of knowledge they already had. The focus for this week was to write facts about their chosen vehicle. They wrote some very good facts. Some children made their own boats on Monday so that they could sail them around the iceberg on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning we all went into the hall where Mr. Dow talked to us about the Titanic. The children sat beautifully and listened intently to all the the facts that he told them. Later in the day the children listened to McKenzie’s great, great, great uncle being interviewed about the Titanic. Some of the children made a Titanic boat and I am sure you will agree they made a wonderful job of it. The children looked really fab in their Titanic outfits and everyone enjoyed the day.

For Numeracy this week the children have been learning about 1 more and one less. I used a number line to explain that you go forward to add one more and you go back for one less. The children also did some practical activities using different vehicles and then wrote the sums on white boards. The children also chose to complete some other numeracy work that I had left on our numeracy table.

On Friday afternoon I decided that the children deserved a treat so we went into the outside play area. You can see how much they enjoyed it. We then had show and tell.

The end of another busy week!

Easter

Uncategorized 7 Comments »

This was a very busy week. The children had lots of things that they needed to make: chocolate nests, Easter cards, Easter bonnets and Easter bunny masks. As you can see from the photos they really enjoyed making the chocolate nests – hoping that some of the mixture would fall out so that they could eat it!

The children had not been able to do PE for a while and so they were thrilled to bits when Mrs Carter took them out onto the grassed area to play with the parachute. They were having such fun when I took the photos of them. I am sure that they will get to use the parachute again soon and Mrs Carter has lots of games for them to play with it. In the outdoor provision we had the space hoppers out. They raced each other and also went in and out of the cones. We also had the big see-saw out which the children loved. They were able to say which side was the heaviest and lightest and what the difference was when bigger/smaller children got on and off.

I was amazed at the Easter bonnets that the children had made at home. They had all put a lot of work into making them. We had the Easter bonnet parade in the afternoon. The best bonnet was chosen by a teacher from another class as we thought that was the fairest way to do it. Well done to the children who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Yellow class.

Well you will have all been waiting for the ‘good news’.

Baxter Lang was born at 1.57 a.m. on Monday weighing 8lb 4oz.

The Easter Story

Uncategorized 2 Comments »

This week our topic has been about the Easter Story. The children have enjoyed learning about the different parts of the Easter Story. They wrote about the parts of the story that they liked best. One of their favourites was when the stone had been removed from the tomb and Jesus’s body had gone. They wrote about Mary Magdalene being visited by two angels. After discussing Palm Sunday the children made some brilliant palm leaves. They also made some crosses and decorated them.

We discussed the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus went to pray after the Last Supper and the solidiers took him away. We looked at some gardens that children had made at other schools. The children made their own garden using pebbles, plants and making their own angels and flowers and a tomb. They were really pleased with it.

One of the activities that they enjoyed most this week was a numeracy lesson delivered by our student Dorothy. We have been learning about adding and taking away. She sat the children in a circle and then made a bus in the middle using 8 chairs. The bus had to have 8 people on it at all times. When 5 children got off another 5 had to get on. It was lovely to see them taking part with so much enthusiasm.

They will miss having fun with Dorothy when she finishes this week.

TRADITIONAL TALES

Uncategorized  Tagged , 4 Comments »

Yellow class have spent the last two weeks doing tradional tales. We looked at Red Riding Hood the first week and enjoyed a trip to the Grand to see a very interesting slant on the story! The children wrote lists of the contents of Red Riding Hood’s basket and then at the end of the week we had a picnic. They really enjoyed looking at other traditional tales as well as those stories that many of the children brought in. We discussed why Red Riding Hood should have listened to her mother. They really enjoyed this discussion. They made masks and built Grandma’s house using the blocks outside.

This week we have been looking at Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children have made puppets using their wooden spoons and will be able to bring them home shortly. They have also made porridge this week which most of them tried but did not like. I told them that I have it every day for my breakfast and they replied “yuk!” They have been writing ‘Wanted’ posters for Goldilocks. Their discriptions of Goldilocks were very good and I am sure that we will find Goldilocks very soon.

I have enjoyed my first two weeks teaching Yellow Class

A huuuuuge THANK YOU!

Uncategorized 1 Comment »

I was so completely overwhelmed by your kindness this morning, anyone who knows me well will know it’s not often that I am lost for words!

May I say a massive thank you from myself (and Mr Lang of course!) for the fabulous gifts, it was so thoughtful of you all and to see the children with their fabulous homemade cards made it all the more special.

It takes more than a teacher to make a class. The amazing progress that the children in Yellow Class have made is also testament to the hard work and support from yourselves as parents. I can honestly say I’ll miss you just as much as the children. Having such approachable and supportive parents really does make a difference.

Thank you once again. I look forward to seeing you all soon (and introducing my new little man!) and of course, updates on Yellow Class are only a Blog away!

With love and thanks

Dungeons and Dragons

Uncategorized No Comments »

Well, it’s been a very busy two weeks for the children in Yellow Class. Our theme has been Dungeons and Dragons (with a little bit of medieval history, knights and princesses thrown in!)
We began by constructing our role play area which many of you will have seen yesterday. The amazing castle prompted so much discussion and role play. The children enjoyed acting out stories that they knew such as Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel whilst the boys quickly found the dragon costumes and fell into ‘capture the princess’ role very quickly!

The story of St. George and the dragon was a favourite and in the outdoor area we built the dragon’s cave to help us act out the story.

We decided after reading books about medieval castles that we would like to have our own banquet. The children quickly got to work writing invitations and menus and making banners and flags with repeating patterns to decorate the pavilion.

Obviously you can’t have a banquet without authentic food and table decorations so we made model castles and salt dough fruit to adorn the table and then put our best kitchen servant hats on to make soup and bread to enjoy.
